Worldwide Motherboard Shipment Volume Expected to Grow in 3Q 2009, According to MIC
According to research of the Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) conducted as part of the ITIS project, in the third quarter of 2009 worldwide motherboard shipment volume is expected to grow, partly as a result from the expected shipment stimulus provided by the Chinese market. Furthermore, as distribution channels in emerging markets are obtaining new capital, motherboard production orders are expected to increase. Demand in mature markets is expected to maintain the level of the previous quarter. Also, due to uncertainties regarding the development of market demand in the fourth quarter of 2009, many companies are concentrating their resources in the third quarter in order to boost their performance. Therefore, it is expected that worldwide motherboard shipment volume will grow 11.9% sequentially in the third quarter of 2009 to approximately 36.0 million units. On a year-on-year basis, however, shipment volume is expected to decline about 10%.
As the shipment share of low-price products for emerging markets, such as China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, is growing, the share of products priced below US$60 in the global motherboard industry's overall shipment volume increased from 85.5% to 87.1% in the second quarter of 2009. As a result, the industry's ASP (Average Selling Price) fell to US$46.6. Shipment value of the worldwide motherboard industry only reached US$1.50 billion in the second quarter of 2009, falling 3% sequentially.
The scale of the current financial crisis has been very large, and the actual results of the economic stimulus measures implemented by the world's major economies are still unclear. Nevertheless, overall economic decline has slowed down recently, and demand in some markets rebounded in the second quarter of 2009. Some motherboard companies even saw their revenues increase in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. Even though worldwide motherboard shipment volume declined 2.3% sequentially in the second quarter of 2009, shipment was not as weak as originally forecasted. Worldwide motherboard shipment volume in the second quarter of 2009 reached approximately 32.08 million units.
